The original image of this work is a photograph which the artist found among her grandfather’s belongings. It is a reproduction of an old print, showing a young Japanese soldier. She speculates that her grandfather, who was also a soldier of the Empire of Japan, brought it back to Japan to replace his body left behind in China.
